GBuy: Moving to Pay per Conversion? February 7, 2006

PayPal Prepares For a Challenge From Google shows that the Google payments play is serious. From many accounts it seems that Google wants to beyond Pay Per Click and into Pay Per Conversion. The most feasible way of doing this is handling the payment.

What does this mean for the Pinoy publisher? For casual players, not good. If more advertisers opt to pay per conversion, then the effects will be worse than Smart Pricing. Pinoy publishers will not be paid at all if Pinoy viewers click but don’t buy. On the other hand, I think it is good for the pros who target foreign surfers who are likely to buy.

What is going to be sold? At first blush, looking at GBuy as a PayPal competitor implies the sale of physical goods. That is something that “Amazon-Sense” may be strong at. However, conversions could also be digital products - ebooks, audio/video and software. Conversion scould also be actions that aren’t charged at once - like subscription to services. Conversions could also be marketing actions that go beyond the click, like downloading a whitepaper or viral video.

What’s in it for Pinoy merchants? If Google Payments has a “Wallet” feature as rumored before, then ecommerce will be easier for Filipinos selling abroad. Google can collect the payment and send cheques through the infrastructure used by Adsense. Digital media vendors in the Philippines can down charge for their downloads, using this micropayment scheme. And with Cost per Conversion, Pinoy merchants spending in US Dollars may get more bank for their buck.

If Gbuy will allow the Philippines in its approved country list (unlike Paypal) or hopefully it is open worldwide, then maybe it will be good for the Filipino web marketers. Hopefully… I am crossing my fingers…
