Google’s Censorship in China January 27, 2006

(Visited 7935 times)

Google’s decision to censor results in China has become a floodgate of protests–a scenario that’s almost like Edsa II, only that you cannot really impeach a search engine, can you?

Since the controversial news, we’ve seen bloggers discontinuing google ads, displeased civil rights groups, outraged Tibetans, students rallying in protest, logo-making contests of sorts (how creative) and well, countless disappointed people, not only in China, but around the globe.

Which makes one wonder, when Google agreed to comply with the Chinese government in censoring the web for Chinese users, did they anticipate such clamor?

Andrew McLaughlin, Google’s senior policy counsel, speaks up.

I know, I know. Filipinos are not really ashamed of this little known detail, in fact, we’re most likely to dismiss it with a laugh. But hey, now we can laugh about it and turn it to our advantage at the same time.

Aaron Wall calls spelling errors an advanced SEO technique. Apparently, he’s not ashamed …

If we can come up with a general profile of that, we can be in a better position to market the entire industry abroad. I also get …

    SEO For All Seasons

If you’ve covered industries that are in demand for all 12 months, consider diversifying your site portfolio to address seasonal demand spikes. Graywolf gives a few topic niches if you want to address the US market. Think ‘Halloween costumes’ (November), ’swimsuits’ (summer months) and ‘wedding rings’ (June).

If you’re going after the US-based Filipino market, you should consider positioning sites that can corner the demand for goods for the following dates:

  • Valentines Day - huge demand spike for flowers, chocolates, sappy heart shaped gifts, etc.; if you missed your anniversary (or monthsary for the hopeless romantics) this is your chance …

If you can avoid Flash, avoid it. If you can’t, then Aaron Wall has a few tips for search engine optimizers working on SEO for Flash-based sites.

A few tips for using flash (if you must use it):

    • Create descriptive useful page titles and meta descriptions.
    • Embed the flash into HTML pages and use regular text links on the page if possible.
    • If it does not screw up the design too bad add HTML text to the page.
    • Create textual representations of what is in the flash using noembed tags.
    • Instead of including everything in one flash file it may make sense to break …
