UK Webmaster World, an online community of webmasters mainly located in UK is currently running an SEO contest that started February 1, 2008 and ends on April Fool’s day, although this contest is not an April Fool’s joke. There are many smaller SEO contest that come up everyday and in the absence of a repeat of last years (supposed to be annual) SEO World Championship by Swedish SEO company GetUpdated that gave a top prize of a brand new car, the only next biggest SEO contest was the UK Webmaster World SEO contest where nearly 200 competitors joined from all over the world. Several large teams can be identified from France, Indonesia, Hungary, Bulgaria, India and the Philippines. Although one unique behavior among the Filipino competitors is they do not seem to be working as a team on a single site. But working, helping each other out but still with their own individual pages. Each person having some confidence of performing well and at least making the top 10 before the contest ends. With less than 2 weeks to do. Here are the standings of some of the Filipino competitors.

Benj Arriola - SEOContest2008.com: Benj won the 2007 SEO World Championship by Get updated and won a car from the seo contest. Current leader in the SEOContest2008 competition but more than a week to go does not assure him a win yet.

Eligio Tapiador Jr. - SEOContest2008.org:3rd place winner in the Ituloy AngSulong SEO contest, Eli has been seeing some recent ranking improvements the past few days in some Google data centers where his rank plays around the 3 to 5 positions.

Gary Viray - EuroSEOContest2008.com: Gary seems to go under the radar in the SEO Philippines community as I seldom hear anything about him in the SEO.ph forum. But one admirable trait I see from Gary is as other Filipinos seem to lose hope in meeting the top 10, I do not see Gary stopping. He still continues to make new blog post for this site and continues to optimize and it looks like it is paying off as he is now peaking into page 1. Depending on datacenters, results may differ but from my view he is currently at number 10.

Garry Baybayan - ItsOnMyTV:SEOContest2008: Garry was one of the early leaders of the SEOContest2008 rankings but has unfortunately dropped as the contest became more competitive nearing the end of the race. Currently on page 2 of the result, Garry can still make a comeback to page 1.

Ed Canape - SEMLaguna:SEOContest2008: Just trailing behind Garry, Ed seems to show results that differ from the datacenters where his rankings usually perform better. Probably just some filter delay, we never know. But Ed, the SEO.ph forum regular poster might just have what it takes to get back in the leaderboard.

Zaldy Dalisay - SEOContest2008Winner: Also one of the top leaders during the early stages of the contest. This ex-PLDT corporate slave-turned-work-at-home internet marketer is known as Major Kontrapelo among his peers in the SEO community. With a winning domain, he ought to be in the winning spots. Hopefully his site springs back to page 1 from page 2.

Jehzeel H. Laurente - Jehzlau’s SEOContest2008: Jehzlau worked hard but in my opinion too soon. Gradual updates work best. If you do quick fast changes and fast link building, you have to maintain the pace up to the end as this can flag artificial link building filters. But the fact that he is on page 3 and often times, datacenters even places his site on page 1, he probably can still work it out to get back.

Kenneth Mendoza - Sabre9: SEOContest2008: Kenneth is hard working and has a strong willingness and passion to learn more in SEO. As every day goes by, this once novice SEO just continues to progress as he continues to learn more. One of the active members of the SEO.ph forum, Kenneth is currently on page 3 and with more than a week left, maybe, just maybe this is not yet the time to say it’s over.

Dennis Cabase - SEOContest2008.me.uk: I honestly do not personally know Dennis and I honestly do not know what he is doing and why he is doing it. But he is running a somewhat a directory eating off RSS feeds from everywhere. This seems to run on a cron job and pinging Technorati hundreds of times a day flooding it with various post. Probably cleaver idea for fresh search engine crawling but lacks the link bait quality content. But wait! Only just yesterday has Google Blogsearch decided to include his site in the top sites for SEOContest2008. Could this mean good news also as it might consider the site for inclusion in the top results on the web? I do not know, currently on page 4 in the contest, let’s see how far it goes.

Other notable Filipino competitors in the SEOContest2008 that are currently on page 5 and beyond are:

Mito Pontillas - SEOContest2008.blogsome

Moslemen ‘Jun’ Macarambon Jr. - SEOContest2008.info

Neil Maranan - MySEOContest2008

Leo Mirabuna - iSEOContest2008

Almer Viloria - AJViloria’s SEOContest2008

Kojak Eugenio - Kojak’s SEOContest2008

Ricusa - Ricusa’s SEOContest2008

Christian Lacsamana - SEOContest2008 Guide

Francis Gerald Alcala - SEOContest2008 SEOContest2008

Eric John Tabin - SEOContest2008.SEOGlobalPro

To those on top of the competition, we wish you stay on top. For the others further down the ranking competition, show some support to fellow countrymen and link to the Pinoy competitors and help them dominate the competition and prove Pinoy SEO professionals are world class. Mabuhay ang SEO Philippines!

SEO Philippines started just with a small group of members on a mailing list powered by Yahoogroups and with a few post on this blog started by the founder Marc Macalua. In the Yahoogroup was where all the action was happening where Filipinos including some non-Filipinos as well who are into SEO or was interested in it and did not know where to start. In the group everyone is sharing ideas, learning and teaching. There were also some of the many colorful conflict of ideas among the members that probably made the group even a lot more lively. The offender and the offended occasionally comes out where there were also the “war continuers”, the peace makers and the arbiters.

With the amount of information going back and forth and continuous growing number of members of the Yahoogroup, it has already reached a point that getting so much emails in our inbox was just not convenient anymore. So the group has moved on to the forum where you get to interact at your own pace. And in the long run as more information is shared, it also becomes more convenient to search for information within the large number of post. Today, you may visit the SEO Philippines forum, join and share information and learn information as well about SEO. The more we share, the more we learn too.
